Painting the Future with Daniel Stone

I paint like I sing or I hear. I have been taught how to hear sound as colour. Both sound and colour vibrate. They both have frequency. The vibration of a sound through colour connects me to you, us to the earth, to the stars, to the universe. The song of blue in the universe, the song of green. These great spaces that colours can sing create a way out of the congested mind. Like a painting as a holiday for the mind, a rest. I see that healing comes to the human when there is movement out of the congested mind, and so the colours offer these spaces. Spaces to breathe. Spaces to let go of thought.

The techniques I have learnt use both acrylic and oils. Sometimes with acrylics I use a lot of water to create very thin layers of colour. Sometimes with both acrylics and oils I paint with thick layers of colour. Some paintings have an idea, or a sensing before I begin them, and sometimes I start with nothing. And wait.
I understand ‘life as dream’ and we move between different dream states through the day and the night. The paintings create a dreaming landscape through which we can move between dreams with fluidity, without suffering. They are all, in essence, a death, a life, an attempt to die beautifully with every second, to understand the birth in every second. I offer these paintings not only to you, but also to the earth, and all the beings who sing here. May we learn to find harmony.

Most of these paintings are created in the desert of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Each page has at theme and there are written descriptions of these themes. I can give a lot more information on each individual painting when requested.

Circles | View Gallery

I paint circles like i paint windows, or time. The vibration of the circle creates a bridge between dreams and we are being invited to open our eyes to something else, somewhere else. We can go through and we can come back. We can be both there and here.
In these paintings, the perfect circle is not necessarily geometrically exact. The function of the circle is to invite you in, or to come out and meet you. They make the link between your body and another body. Some of them link the earth body with other planetary bodies, and others talk of the relation between you, the earth, and the stars.
William Shakespeare talks of ¨Infinity in a grain of sand¨. The circle links all the expressions of the molecular vibrations, from the atom to the planet, from the self to the universe. It completes us. It shows us our potential to be whole.

Dreams | View Gallery

The word 'dream' here relates to the dream of the night and the dream of the day. I understand life as dream, and we move between different dream states in the night and the day. The word dream can also be like the word 'dimension' or 'world', or even 'space' like a room, or a place you visit. So these paintings are spaces, places. They are also related to sound. In many traditions creation is sung into being, and in some traditions it is dreamed into being. So these are creation songs, and the painter sings the dreams into being..

Twelve Tones | View First Gallery | View New Gallery

The number 12 is historically related to birth. The number 3 is related to the triangle, the first form, and the number 4 is related to the grounding of the form, or the house. The 12 is the 3 x 4, which is the quadruple birth, and this is the form of the pyramid. The twelve creates the possiblity of new energies entering, and old energies leaving. Transition. Transformation. In the context of this particular time, this circle of twelve paintings is related to the the Mayan Calendar, which ends in 2012, and the transition between one age and another.

In this series of twelve paintings, twelve tones are used. Eight of the tones (the smaller paintings) are related to a direction on the shamanic medicine wheel.

Yellow north (element of air)

Brown south (Element of earth)

Black (time)

Orange north east

Indigo south west

White (no time)

Red - east (element of fire)

Blue west (element of wter)

Gold (Planet earth and clockwise spiral)

Violet south east

Green north west.

Silver (Star and anti-clockwise spiral)

All of the oil paintings in the 2010 series, contain the twelve tones, some in more subtle forms, like dots. The tones are also related to sounds, and this twelve tone system relates in principle to the 12-tone scale which are all the posible notes (including sharps and flats) in all of the music you hear.  In the 2011 series I have focused more on one or two specific dominant tones for each painting.
